Manchester United League group draw Pot 2 after Europa win

Manchester United will be in Pot 2 for August's Champions League group stage draw after they confirmed their place in the competition with a 2-0 win over Ajax in the Europa League final on Wednesday.

Goals from Paul Pogba and Henrikh Mkhitaryan won the trophy for Jose Mourinho's men.

United would have been in Pot 3, ranked below Napoli, Tottenham Hotspur and FC Basel, had they qualified by finishing in the top four and not competed in Europe this season. But their Europa League success, and the UEFA coefficient ranking points it earned, has proved useful on two fronts.

The Premier League will have five teams in next season's Champions League -- Chelsea, Tottenham, Manchester City and United in the group stage, and Liverpool in the final qualifying round.

It also means England will have just two representatives in the Europa League, with Arsenal straight to the group stage and Everton in the third qualifying round, which starts at the end of July.

United's victory gives Czech Cup winners FC Fastav Zlin a direct route to the Europa League group stage. They have only once before played in Europe, when they lost to PSV Eindhoven in the first round of the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1970.

Real Madrid completed the lineup of Champion League seeds on Sunday when they wrapped up La Liga. Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Chelsea, Monaco, Spartak Moscow and Shakhtar Donetsk are also in Pot 1.

Pots 2 to 4 are based on UEFA club coefficient over the last five years. There will be a strong collection of teams in the second pot, with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Man City, FC Porto and United assured of their places.

They will be joined in Pot 2 by Sevilla if they come through the final qualifying round with Napoli, who also may have to qualify, able to benefit if the La Liga team are eliminated. If both Sevilla and Napoli fail to make the group stage, Tottenham would move up.

At present Roma face being in Pot 4, though will move up to Pot 3 if a seeded team loses in the playoffs.

The group stage draw takes place on Aug. 24.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE DRAW POTS

Seeded (confirmed): Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Juventus, Benfica, Chelsea, Shakhtar Donetsk, Monaco, Spartak Moscow

Pot 2 (provisional): Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund, Sevilla*, Man City, FC Porto, Man United

Pot 3 (provisional): Napoli*, Tottenham, FC Basel, Dynamo Kiev*, Ajax*, Olympiakos*, Anderlecht, Liverpool*

Pot 4: All other qualifying clubs, which could include Roma*, RB Leipzig, Celtic*, Nice* and Feyenoord

* denotes must/could come through qualifying rounds

Falcons Seize AWCON Trophy, Reject NFF's N50,000 Allowance

The drama surrounding the payment of match bonuses and allowances of Super Falcons by the Nigeria Football Federation gets messier yesterday (Tuesday) as the players threatened to hold onto the African Women Cup of Nations trophy they won last Saturday.

The NFF had promised to pay the players and the officials on Monday when they returned to the country on Sunday after claiming their eighth AWCON title in Cameroon, but officials of the soccer federation did not even show up at the Agora Hotel, Abuja where they lodged the team on the said day let alone give them money.

Our correspondent learnt on Tuesday that things almost got out of hand when the NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, eventually visited the team and told them that there was no money to pay.

Sources at the meeting told New Telegraph that the meeting almost ended in fiasco as the players vowed to remain at the hotel until their money is paid.

They even grabbed the trophy they won and vowed not to release it until they are paid. “Pinnick was trying to pacify the players to exercise patience that they will be paid soon, but they (the players) asked him to be specific and the manner those of them asked the question got the NFF boss angry,” a source who was at the meeting told New Telegraph.

“The NFF boss was not happy with the way the stars were handling the issue and made some statements that also infuriated the players. I won’t tell you what Pinnick said because it is better you people don’t write those things.” The NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, had earlier visited the team and also begged the players to be patient.

He attempted to give them N50,000 each as transport fare which they rejected. One of the players, who did not want her name in print, said they would stay until concrete arrangement is reached on the payment.

“We are aware of what happened to the U-17 and U-20 female teams who left with empty promises and we do not want to have the same ex-perience.

Before we left there were promises they made and until they fulfill them we will remain in this place,” she said. In a statement released by the federation, Sanusi was quoted to have said at the meeting that: “I have come to appeal to you, to understand the situation of the federation and the country at the moment and exercise patience.

“We will pay you all monies you are being owed as soon as we receive same from the government, just as we paid the U-17 boys who won the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Chile last year, after the tournament.

And just as we sorted out Coach Samson Siasia’s wages as soon as we had the funds, after the Olympics.” He added that: “We know we have financial commitment to you (players and officials of Super Falcons) and we have not at any time stated otherwise. But the money is not readily available at the moment.”

Sanusi said the NFF had embarked on aggressive drive to find a permanent solution to the issue of owing players and coaches. “In relation to all these, we are in the process of sorting out our TSA domiciliary accounts so that we can receive our due grants from FIFA and CAF, including the $80,000 prize money from the AWCON, once it is available.”

Meanwhile, Sanusi has confirmed that the NFF is waiting for words from the Federal Government on when the African champions will be hosted to a state reception.

“The reception is out of our hands. We are waiting on the Federal Government, and as soon as we have confirmation of the date, we will inform the players and officials to regroup in

Four female footballers who are lesbians

The joy and expectation of many female footballers is to one day hang their boots and get married when they will have the chance of having their own children.

Former Super Falcons player Mercy Akide Udoh is amongst the great players to have played in Europe, and now she is happily married with kids.

But there are lots of female footballers who have chose not to change their status as they don’t want to do anything with men.

1. Megan Anna Rapinoe

Rapinoe is an advocate for numerous LGBT, lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders organisations, including the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) and Athlete Ally.

                       Megan Anna Rapinoe

In 2013, she was awarded the Board of Directors award by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. On July 2, 2012, Rapinoe came out as a lesbian in an interview with Out magazine, in which she revealed that she had been in a relationship with Australian football player Sarah Walsh since 2009.

2. Lilian Parr

English Football Hall of Fame inductee Lily Parr was the first openly lesbian, and it came at a time when female homosexuality was a taboo in British society.

Lily Parr was an English professional women’s association football player who played as a winger. In 2002 she was the only woman to be made an inaugural inductee into the English Football Hall of Fame at the National Football Museum.

3. Nadine Marejke Angerer

Recognized as one of the world’s best female goalkeepers during her extensive international career, Angerer who was born on November 10, 1978 is a retired German footballer who played as a goalkeeper.

The penalty-saving specialist was on January 13, 2014 named FIFA World Player of the Year, becoming the first goalkeeper – male or female to win the award.

4. Åsa Nilla Maria Fischer

She played the first competitive game for her new side in the Bundesliga 2013-14 season opener against Bayern Munich in front of a home crowd of 8,249 fans on September 7, 2013.

Fischer finally broke the ice in 2013 when she granted an interview to QX magazine in which she announced her intention to marry her female partner and in December 2013 she married her partner Mariah-Michaela.

I am a rich gay - Ronaldo (photos)

There are strong indications that Portugal and Real Madrid striker Cristiano Ronaldo could be gay.

CR7 seem to have confirmed speculation that he is homosexual when he stated right after he netted a hat-trick for Los Blancos in their 3 – 0 away win at Atletico Madrid.

The 31-year-old was said to have had a clash with Atletico’s Koke who referred to him in Spanish as ‘gay’. Furious Ronaldo replied saying “Yes, I’m gay, but I’m a very rich gay.”

In 2015, Spanish daily Sport claims the former Manchester United and Sporting Lisbon man could be seeing the professional kick-boxer Badr Hari.

The report suggested that Ronaldo flies to Morocco to visit his friend several times in a week and their cuddly positions when they take pictures together has raised suspicions.

Ronaldo is a single father after breaking up with his girlfriend of five years Irina Shayk back in January 2016. Badr Hari meanwhile has a few kids of his own.

Daniel Riolo, a contributor on French television show Touche pas a mon sport, said: “Ronaldo takes three or four jets a week to see a friend in Morocco and cuddle with him.”

Back in 2010, Ronaldo praised Portugal’s decision to allow gay marriage.

He said: “As I am Portuguese, I try to keep myself informed about what is happening in my country.

“We must respect the choices of each other, because, after all, all citizens should have the same rights and responsibilities.”

Nigeria is too poor to go to World Cup - Solomon Dalung

Nigeria minister of sports Solomon Dalung
Despite the impressive performances of the Super Eagles in their last two 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying games which they won against Zambia and Algeria leading CAF qualifying Group B with maximum 6 points, it has now been stated that Nigeria might not be going to the next World Cup if they eventually qualify for the tournament.

In a statement credited to the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung asserted that he is against the country’s participation at the World Cup competition.

Dalung said that the World Cup competition is stinks of corruption stressing that Nigeria is too poor to be wasting money going for the tournament. Super Eagles during a training session

The minister said there is no need for the Super Eagles to participate in the next World Cup claiming that Nigeria would never win the trophy.

Dalung added that the country’s focus should be on playing at the African Nations Cup, Olympics games and the Common wealth games.

But the Super Eagles won’t take part at the next African Nations Cup in January 2017 in Gabon, and qualifying for the 2018 FIFA World Cup is all what Nigeria football fans are clamoring for.

Many pundits have however been left stunned with the statement of the Sports Minister as many have queried his rationale for him to have supported the Super Eagles in their last World Cup qualifying game against Algeria since he knew there would not be any need for Nigeria to participate in the tournaments.
