UNILAG student slumps, dies after night out.
Tragedy stuck at the Moremi Hall of the University of Lagos after a Chemistry Education student, identified simply as Tope, slumped and died at the institution’s medical centre. Sources in UNILAG said the student, who was squatting in the hostel, died shortly after returning from an outing with a man.
They added that Tope could have been saved if she was promptly attended to at the centre.
One of them said, “Tope was squatting here. She went to a club and returned around midnight on Thursday. It was not long afterwards that she started gasping. We rushed her to the UNILAG Medical Centre, but they blamed the student who allowed her to squat in her room. Tope eventually died, while the other student is being threatened with eviction.’’
However, the management of the university said no student died at the centre. A statement from the school’s Deputy Registrar, Information Unit, Mr. Toyin Adebule, said Tope died before she was brought to the centre.
“I wish to state that the incident did not happen at the centre. Also, there is no report from the hall to the Dean of Students Affairs on the incident. Therefore, no student has been ejected from the hall,” the statement read in part.

Update:- Doctor Who stabbed his mother to death.
Cletus, one of the older brothers of Emmanuel Ogah, the medical doctor who stabbed their 59-year-old mother, Janet, to death penultimate Thursday, has revealed that his younger brother (Emmanuel) graduated from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 2007.
But he said due to ‘depression relapse’ he suffers occasionally, he went for his one year national youth service in 2016, nine years after.
Cletus revealed that Emmanuel was 27 years then when he graduated, having been a brilliant student.
He said all the seven children of their late mother are graduates and four of them graduated from ABU. Cletus said he read Chemical Engineering.
He said Emmanuel did well in his secondary school certificate result and scored well over 4 points in Cumulative Grade Point Average when he graduated in Medicine from ABU in 2007.
He said, “He made 4.38 as his CGPA at ABU.
While Cletus said it was true that he suffered ‘depression relapse’ on some occasions, he said the family had taken him to certain psychiatric facilities for medical intervention in Kaduna, Kano, Lagos and Uyo.
He said, “We noticed the problem of depression in him in 2008, when he was doing his housemanship. He was reported to have spoken rudely to his superiors.
“He was sent away from that place. Again, in subsequent years, he went to some other places for the housemanship, the same thing happened.
“We took him to the Psychiatric Hospital at Yaba, Lagos in 2014 where he was receiving treatment and doing his housemanship.
“Eventually he completed it at this place, but he was still asked to go and serve the one year national service, because they said he was 27 when he graduated from ABU. That was what he was doing at Jigawa State, when he returned last Wednesday and he killed our mother on Thursday.”
On that fateful day, Emmanuel, who was believed to be under some ‘forces’ controlling him, knifed their mother to death at her restaurant located along Lafenwa-Itele Road, Aparadija in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area of Ogun State.
He did not kill the mother in their residence on Number 16 Ololade Lateef Street, Aparadija, Lafenwa-Itele, as earlier reported.
The picture of the corpse which had gone viral on the social media was gory enough. Emmanuel disembowelled the mother, and gave her other deep cuts on the face and neck.
Also the video of his ‘detention’ inside burglar proof section of the restaurant after he had done the havoc, did not portray him as being coherent in all the questions put to him on why he killed the mother.
Cletus, who said he got to the scene two hours after Emmanuel had killed their mother, said he(Emmanuel) was still being ‘detained’ in the shop, when he arrived.
He said when he jabbed him and asked him why he killed their mother, he suddenly became remorseful, saying he never knew what came upon him.
He said, “When I arrived our mother’s restaurant two hours after the incident, Emmanuel was still being held inside the shop, I moved closer to him, jabbed him twice and asked him: ‘why did you kill our mother?’ All he could say was ‘brother, I did not know what happened, brother I did know what happened’ and he started crying.
“Then he began to say some incoherent things.
“I believe there were ‘some forces’ at work on him. Because from the responses, it seemed that he came to his senses suddenly and showed remorse. Emmanuel neither smoked nor drank alcohol. I had taken him out on some occasions.”
Cletus said their mother was a loving mother who supported her husband, Bernard Ogah, now a retired soldier to train all of them.
He recalled, “I could remember in my own case, my mother plaited hair for people in the barracks to raise money and supported in paying my school fees then while I was in ABU.
“My mother gave her all to her children.”
A service of songs was organised for her on Thursday in front of her former shop, where her virtues were celebrated.
Pastor Femi Samuel said, “Mama was quite accommodating and she was always smiling.
“She was a giver. If you came to the restaurant, you would eat whether you have money or not.”
One of her neighbours, Stephen Gyamfi described her as a “mother well loved by those who knew her.”
The landlord of the house where she had her restaurant, Mr. Eddy, who said the deceased rented the shop from him in February 2016, described her as a nice and easy going person.
Eddy said he had only seen Emmanuel once at the mother’s restaurant. “I only saw him once, and that was sometime last year. He was clutching a travelling bag and the mother told me that’s her son. Then he was going for the national service as a youth corp.”
The remains of the late Mrs. Janet Ogah have since been taken to her village, Agila, via Oturkpo in Benue State, on Friday for burial.
Meanwhile, Emmanuel is still being held at the homicide section of the Ogun State Police Command headquarters, Abeokuta.

Lady Drugs, Robs Medical Doctor She Met On Badoo, Flees With Phones, Car, Laptop
Some operatives of Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested a lady in Agbor, Delta State, for drugging her friend, a medical doctor, in a hotel in Ojodu area of Lagos and carting away his car, laptop and mobile phone.
The lady, Mitchel Harrold, 37, from Warri, Delta State was on Tuesday arrested after the operatives traced her through a car dealer in Lagos, whom she had engaged to help perfect import papers for the stolen Volkswagen Passat Wagon, 2001 model.
In a statement on Sunday, the police said the suspect and the medical doctor had on January 19 at about 5:30 p.m. checked into a popular hotel in the Ojodu Berger area of Lagos with the plan to spend the night.
Ms. Harrold had, after settling down, gone to get a malt drink and yoghurt while the boyfriend was taking his bath.
According to the victim, Daniel Biyi (not real name) “I went in to take a bath and when I returned, she had gone to buy some drinks. I took the malt drink and yoghurt and I slept off. I slept off at 6:00 p.m. and woke up around 2:00 p.m.
“Behold, when I woke up, my personal effects such as phone and laptop had gone.
“Unfortunately for me, I do not know any of her relatives. We only met on a social media dating site, Badoo about a year ago.
“As I woke up, I rushed straight to meet with the receptionist and gateman to ask for her whereabouts, that was when I realised my car had been taken away too.
“They told me someone came to pick the car for her. And, she said she was going to get food. Immediately, I reported the incident at Omole Police Station.”
The victim said he was just aware of the lady’s real name as Mitchel Harrold after the arrest, because she gave him Aisha Ibrahim as name.
“I was getting to know her for real now,” he said.
“Since the incident, I had been trying to call her but to no avail. One of the numbers was switched off, she wasn’t picking the other.”
Arrested alongside with her, was one Gbenga Adesanya, a generator repairer, whom she engaged to drive the stolen vehicle.
According to Mr. Adesanya, “I was surprised to see her opening the gate of the hotel herself for me to drive out instead of the gateman. That wasn’t the first time I would be helping her take a vehicle out of Lagos to Sapele.
“It was about the third time.
“First, it was a Toyota Camry ‘Big for Nothing.’ I helped her moved it from Ajah to Sapele, Delta State. The second one was an ‘End of Discussion’ Honda Accord and thirdly, Volkswagen Passat, 2001 model. I moved that too all night to Sapele.”
Mr. Adesanya said he was introduced to Ms. Harrold last year by her elder brother, who worked as clearing and forwarding agent.
“I was told she needed the assistance of a good driver to take to Warri. I later met her in Ajah where I helped take a Toyota Camry to Sapele,” he said.
“About four months later, she summoned me to GRA Ikeja. She gave me a Honda Accord (End of Discussion) to help her collect fuel from her brother at Wawa, Ogun State. I took the fuel and returned the car. She then told me that she has gotten another driver to take her. She gave me N5000 and I left.
“The last vehicle is the one that has created crisis for me. Although, I have been wondering where she has been getting these cars but she told me that she hired them from Delta whenever she comes to Lagos, and that a driver brought her to Lagos and returned to Delta. I don’t know she steals cars.”
The police said Ms. Harrold had already informed her brother, Mukoro Okpako, of her desire to sell the car urging him to assist her in perfecting custom papers for the Volkswagen Passat two days before she was arrested in Agbor, Delta State.
The police added that the vehicle was recovered in Warri. It was further learnt that she had removed the number plate and put it in a car mart for sale.
“She attempted concealing the stolen phone when she was arrested,” the police stated.
“As it were now, whereabouts of the other stolen, Honda accord, End of Discussion and Toyota Camry, Big for Nothing remained unknown as she refused to cooperate with the Police during preliminary investigation.”
The Lagos State Police’ spokesperson, Dolapo Badmus, who confirmed the arrest, noted that the case has been transferred to State criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.

20-year-old Man Jailed For Life In Ekiti For Rape Of 4-year-old Girl
An Ado-Ekiti High Court, on Tuesday, sentenced a 20-year-old man, John Okebe, to life imprisonment for the rape of a four-year-old year girl in Ekiti community. Okebe, the state counsel, Mr Femi Onipede, had told the court, committed the offence on August 3, 2015 at Isaba Street, Ilupeju-Ekiti in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State.
The prosecution had accused Okebe of unlawfully raping and defiling the four-year-old girl which, it said, led to grievous harm on the girl, so much that she was being hospitalised.
The offence, the prosecution had argued, contravened section 358 of the Criminal Code, Laws Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.
The prosecution called five witnesses to prove its case while the defense counsel, Mr Taiwo Adeloye called only the accused person as his witness.
The accused counsel urged the court to discountenance all the evidence of the prosecution, describing them as “feeble and porous.”
The state counsel had also urged the court to convict the accused person based on the evidence he had brought before the court.
Justice J O Adeyeye, in his judgment, said the confessional statement of the accused and other corroborative evidences of the prosecution reinforced the conviction.
Justice Adeyeye found the accused guilty as charged, and observed that the act of rape and defilement were rampant in the state.
He said the prosecution counsel had proved its case of rape beyond reasonable doubt, saying “I have carefully considered the evidence of the witnesses for the prosecution and that of the accused persons.
“I found the evidence of the prosecution credible and reliable,” he added.
Justice Adeyeye hereby sentenced the accused person to life imprisonment.
