Use part of the Confab report - Afenifere urges Buhari

While giving the advice, the group charged President Muhammadu Buhari to forget any misgiving he has about the 2014 national Confab report and be courageous to make use of those aspects that will take the country to greater heights.

President Buhari ureged not to discard Confab reports as presented by former president, Goodluck Jonathan.
Secretary-General of the group, Basorun Sehinde Arogbofa spoke to news men in Akure. Arogbofa speaking for the group said there was the need for the president to implement the report of the 2014 confab which, according to him, contains all the solutions to the challenges facing the nation.

According to him, “It will be a disservice if the report is thrown into the dustbin by the President. Such a report cannot be wished away We will appeal to our President who is the father of the nation and the number one citizen to have a second look and summon the courage to pick up the report and make use of those aspects that can make the country move forward.

“President Buhari should be bold enough to look at the report. Nigerians and not spirits or ghosts took the decisions. Ego doesn’t pay where the welfare of the people is concerned. We are surprised that the President would take such a position that he has no intention to glance at the report or make use of it.

“Those who met for the confab are all Nigerians, important Nigerians for that matter that cut across age, positions and tribes. They met to discuss the problems of this country and came out with over 600 consensus resolutions. The reason adduced by the President for taking such a position is not the best and it defiles logic. He was quoted to have said that money was spent on the 2014 Confab while the Universities in the country were on strike. The problems in our university was just one of the problems that the Confab addressed and proffered solutions to.”

Speaking in the same vein the national publicity secretary of pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Mr Yinka Odumakin said that the renewed calls for implementation of the Confab report is an indication that only the recommendation can resolve the current wave of self determination calls in Nigeria.

He also called on President Muhammadu Buhari not to ignore such calls in the light of the ongoing bombing of pipelines in the Niger Delta region by Niger Delta Avengers,NDA, and protests by the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. Odumakin, who said this in an exclusive chat with Vanguard urged the President to urgently set up a committee on the report or prevail on the National Assembly to commence work on the recommendations.

His words: “The confab report is the manual that can save Nigeria now. He should take the report and give to the National Assembly or set up a committee to work on it, when that is done, he will see that he will have a country to govern. At the moment he does not have a country. The calls to restructure Nigeria is the only way out for Nigeria at the moment. On two fronts, the economy has collapsed.

“The centrifugal forces are now at play and Nigeria is on the verge of disintegration. In the last two weeks I have seen Biafran currency, I have seen the Middle Belt currency, IPOB is on the prowl, Avengers are avenging, herdsmen are on rampage and there is unease in the country. Now, the President of the country wanted to travel and some people threatened him not to travel, that’s not the kind of country we have to be proud of.

“If the President today picks the report of the national conference and ask the National Assembly to start working on it, I can assure you that all the people making those agitation will put down their weapons. But if he says that he want to continue with Nigeria the way it is now and think that he can use gun boat to save the country that is on the verge of collapse, he will not succeed.’’

Meanwhile, the foremost Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere has responded to call by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti that he has placed a ban on cattle grazing in the state.

Afenifere in a statement on Monday, May 23 said Fayose’s move was courageous and the group was solidly behind him.

Fayose issued the ban following attack by herdsmen on a community in of Oke-Ako leading to the death of two people and leaving others injured.

Premium Times reports that Yinka Odumakin who is the spokesperson of Afenifere said the action of Fayose was a timely move to strengthen the civilization that gives value to human lives above cows.

Ijaw to FG: Withdraw troops from Niger Delta

Ijaw leaders from the 78 Ijaw clans, traditional institutions and socio-political bodies from Bayelsa, Delta, Rivers, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Ondo and Delta states met yesterday in Warri for several hours over the renewed violence in the Niger Delta region, especially the destruction of critical infrastructure by the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).

Many women and children from several Ijaw communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom, who escaped the onslaught by soldiers, narrated their ordeals in the hands of the troops at the meeting.

The meeting convened by the Ijaw National Congress (INC) exposed the dire humanitarian crisis in several Ijaw communities of Oporoza; Kunukunu-Amu; Okokodiagbene; Benikruku; Kurutie; Okerekolo; Naifor; Azakrama; Kenghangbene; Igoba and several others.

Several Ijaw leaders who spoke at the ceremony include INC Secretary, Dr. Bibobra Bello Orubebe, who said: “As we speak, several Ijaw people cannot be accounted for and their whereabouts, including status as to whether they are alive or dead, cannot be ascertained.

“Our people are starving and being molested without recourse to minimum international human rights standards in law enforcement.

“Ijaw children who went to write NECO are stranded and several of our people are in the forest and the wounded unattended.

“The situation is dire.”

The INC condemned the “use of violence by both civilians and the federal government” and urged parties to the crisis to respect the sanctity of human lives, livelihood, economy, culture and environment of Ijaw people.

The INC explained that they shunned the invitation to the flag-off of the UNEP clean-up ceremony at Ogoni, Rivers State on Thursday because the government cannot be killing Ijaw people with soldiers and still expect them to honour the invitation.

The INC secretary told the Buhari government: “You cannot kill the Ijaw people and rule successfully. We are asking the military to open the waterways for the people to move freely.

“We are appealing to the federal government to order all the soldiers that have occupied several Ijaw communities to leave, because we are not pipeline vandals and members of the Niger Delta Avengers do not live in these villages.

“The Ijaw indicated interest to work with the Buhari government after he was sworn in; we sent representation to the government showing our intention to work with them, but till date, they have not reached out to us.

“The INC welcomes the clean up of Ogoni, based on the UNEP report. We boycotted the ceremony because you cannot be killing Ijaw people and expect us to attend.”

Orubebe urged the National Emergency management Agency (NEMA) and other humanitarian organisations to send relief materials to the suffering displaced people.

The Chairman of Kokodiagbene community, Sheriff Mulade, who was at the meeting, said the suffering in Gbaramatu communities are enormous.

“Many of the women and children ran into the swamps when the soldiers arrived. As we speak, many of them have not been rescued, because the soldiers have barred all boats from entering and leaving the communities.

“It is a pathetic situation and we are urging the soldiers to allow aides to be delivered to them, because many of them have been in the swamps since a week ago without food.”

Also, Hendrix Opukeme, another Ijaw leader, said the Ijaw are peaceful people and do not want escalation of the crisis and appealled to the Buhari government to withdraw the troops to avert further suffering of the displaced people.

A woman, who gave her name as Angela Temowei, said she was forced to flee Oporoza with her two children when the soldiers started shooting indiscriminately.

Temowei added that she has not set eyes on her husband and his aged mother, saying several people were still hiding in the swamps, because there was no way they could escape.

She said she was lucky to make it to Warri, because she left when the first batch of soldiers arrived.

Another displaced person, Lepe Kenekuma, said: “I hid in the roof of a house for two days before I decided to swim to back of Oporoza, where I paddled a canoe to a location, where I was rescued by a boat operator.”

He said the military had shut down the waterways and barred boats from reaching displaced people.

Kenekuma urged Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa to assist his distressed citizens.

Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) yesterday bombed the 48-inch Forcados export pipeline at Forcados export terminal.

The militants had earlier destroyed the pipeline, but government commenced its repair, despite their warning to stop.

On its Twitter handle yesterday the Avengers warned Agip oil firm, saying: “We are sending this warning message to #AGIP not to commence repair works on any of the blown pipelines in Bayelsa.

“We will make you regret it if you even dare us,” its spokesman, Mudoch Aginibo, wrote.

De Gea wants to work under Jose Mourinho

Manchester United’s David de Gea has possibly sqashed any rumours about a move by claiming he is willing and ready to work under new manager Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho was appointed United boss last week after Louis Van Gaal left the club while De Gea almost joined Real Madrid last summer but a broken fax machine scuppered the transfer on deadline day.

De Gea signed a new big money contract at United just days later and the Spain goalie is ready to work under the new manager.

However, he has attempted to put all speculation to bed by admitting he’s excited to work under new manager Jose Mourinho.

He told Spanish outlet Marca:

“Talk about Jose Mourinho and you’re talking about a winner. Winning is United’s, Jose’s and my philosophy. We can make a great team and I welcome him.

“I’ve got three more years on my contract with United and the desire to win more titles here.

“When it comes to United, if you don’t win everything, it’s not good enough. This FA Cup is important for the club, it’s important for the fans, and it’s an important step towards winning major titles again.”

Real Madrid To Loan De Gea To Manchester Utd, After Signing From The Club

Fresh reports from Spain say that La Liga giants, Real Madrid is willing to loan back to Manchester United for the 2016-17 season Spain goalkeeper, David de Gea.

According to Spanish media outlet, Cadena Cope, Real Madrid is set to press ahead with its plans to sign goalkeeper De Gea, but will not mind letting Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United have him for at least one more season before he joins the Bernabue side fully.

Madrid is confident it can get de Gea to Spain during this transfer window with the right deal. This will however be a blow to Manchester United fans who want the Spaniard to man their goal for another season.

Meanwhile, Manchester United is reportedly keen on a move for Bordeaux’s teen sensation, Adam Ounas.

According to Daily Mirror UK, the Old Trafford club has already made contact with the Ligue Un side over the availability of the 19-year-old attacking midfielder.
