Modu Sheriff’s faction relocates Ondo PDP primary to Ibadan

The faction of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) controlled by Senator Ali Sheriff has relocated its governorship primary to Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, following security reason.

The faction was to pick its candidate for the November 26 election in Akure, the state capital, today.

A statement by its Director of Media and Publicity, Yemi Akintomide, said the primaries would now hold at the PDP Southwest zonal secretariat in Ibadan.

The statement said the Ahmed Gulak-led Committee constituted by Sheriff had taken over the conduct of the primary from the State Executive Committee, with its Chairman, Biyi Poroye, as member.

It urged aspirants and party delegates to move to Ibadan yesterday in preparation for the primary.

The statement said: “We are not aware of any court injunction stopping the primary, as all court pronouncements were in favour of the Senator Alimodu Sheriff-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP.”

Five aspirants, including Jimoh Ibrahim, Sola Ebiseni, Bamiduro Dada, Niran Sule-Akinsuyi and the only female, Mrs. Abiye, are contesting.

The Makarfi faction, where Governor Olusegun Mimiko belongs, conducted its primary election last Monday.

The former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Eyitayo Jegede, won the faction’s election, scoring 760 votes against his opponent, Saka Lawal, who got 22 votes.

Police probe death of man in lover’s apartment

The Lagos State Police Command has begun investigation into the discovery of the lifeless body of a 37-year-old man in her girlfriend’s apartment in Abule-Egba area of Lagos.

This is just as a fleeing member of a suspected robbery gang was knocked down by a vehicle at Ijaniki area of Lagos, weekend. The deceased identified as Sikiru Olarewaju, as gathered, went to spend the night at his girlfriend’s house at 37 Surulere street, last week Tuesday.

Trouble, however, started the following day after efforts to wake him up proved abortive, as he was discovered to be stone dead. The exact cause of his death could not be immediately ascertained as there was reportedly no gunshot wound on him or marks of violence to suggest that he could have been stabbed or shot. Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Dolapo Badmus, who confirmed the incident, said policemen from Oke-Odo division who “visited, examined and photographed the scene , discovered no trace of violence on the body.

The corpse had been removed and deposited at the morgue. Meanwhile, a suspected member of a five- man robbery gang, who was fleeing a robbery scene at Oja Lowo bus-stop was knocked down by a vehicle, weekend.

Eye witnesses said the hoodlums were robbing passers-by at the bus-stop of cash and other valuables. Some of them were said to have attempted to rape a female victim when a team of policemen from Ijanikin division, who acted on a tip off stormed the scene at about 9.30pm.

The robbers reportedly took to their heels on sighting the policemen, but in the process, one of them was hit by a vehicle killing him on the spot. Another identified as Bassey Eyo was arrested, while others managed to escape.

Manchester United were given a tough Europa League group on Friday, drawn with Fenerbahce, Feyenoord and Zorya Luhansk.

Manager Jose Mourinho likened the draw to that of the Champions League, and will know that trips to Istanbul, Rotterdam and Ukraine cannot be taken lightly.

In Zorya Luhansk, United face a trip into the unknown. The European debutants - who reached the play-offs in the last two years but failed to progress - are based in the east of the country, close to the border with Russia.

However, because of the war in that part of the country Jose Mourinho's side are set to play at the Slavutych Arena in Zaporizhia, which is more centrally located.

Claude Puel's Southampton side, meanwhile, were given a dream draw in that they will face Inter Milan, the 2010 Champions League winners. Sparta Prague and Hapoel Beer-Sheva make up Group K.

Dundalk were drawn in Group D alongside Zenit St Petersburg, AZ Alkmaar and Maccabi Tel-Aviv.

Games will be played from September 15 to December 8. The top two teams from each group are joined in the round-of-32 by the eight third-place teams from the Champions League groups.

Watford 1-2 Chelsea: Ighalo, Moses In Action As Chelsea Outscore Watford

Super Eagles forward, Odion Ighalo, featured for 90 minutes while Victor Moses was introduced in the second half as Chelsea came from a goal down to beat Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

Goals from Michy Batshuayi and Diego Costa gave Chelsea their second win of the season.

Etienne Capoue gave Watford the lead, his second goal of the season.

The game’s first chance fell to Watford in the seventh minute through Jose Holebas but his low shot was well saved by Thibaut Courtois.

In the 11th minute Eden Hazard went close for Chelsea only to see his effort turned away for a corner by Miguel Britos.

Odion Ighalo had Watford’s best chance of the half on 24 minutes following a cross from Amrabat but missed from close range.

Two minutes later Brasnislav Ivanovic met Hazard’s free-kick which was saved by Hureleo Gomes.

And one minute into added time, Hazard’s 20-yard free-kick beat Watford’s two-man wall but was stopped by Gomes.

The first chance of the second half fell to Chelsea on 52nd minute but Costa couldn’t connect with Oscar’s cross.

In the 55th minute, Capoue put Watford 1-0 ahead as he chests a cross from the right and volleyed a left-foot strike into the top corner.

Hazard almost responded for Chelsea on 58 minutes, but his shot was saved by Gomes.

Chelsea made their first change with Moses replacing Pedro in the 71st minute.

Two minutes later Michy Batshuayi was introduced for Oscar.

In the 80th minute Batshuayi equalised for Chelsea tapping in from six-yard after Gomes spilled Hazard’s shot.

Chelsea went close to snatching the lead on 85 minutes off a scramble but Gomes gathered.

But with three minutes left, Costa scored the winning goal, collecting a long pass from substitute Fabrega before slotting the ball under Gomes.

And at White Hart Lane new signing Victor Wanyama was the saviour as he scored the only goal as Tottenham hotspur pipped Crystal Palace 1-0.

The former Southampton midfielder netted in the 83rd minute off kanes’ assist to give Spurs the win.

It was Spurs’ first victory of the season after drawing 1-1 away to Everton in the opening day of the campaign.

Stoke City 1-4 Manchester City: Iheanacho Shines, Aguero Bags Brace As Man City Outclass Stoke + Match Highlights

Sergio Aguero took his tally to eight goals in seven Premier League games against Stoke City and Nolito grabbed a late brace as Manchester City secured a 4-1 victory at the bet365 Stadium.

Argentina international Aguero scored a penalty and a header in the first half on Saturday to help Pep Guardiola's side to a third victory in three competitive games of the new season.

Aguero missed twice from the spot during the midweek Champions League play-off thrashing of Steaua Bucharest, but he made no mistake from 12 yards when Ryan Shawcross was rather harshly penalised by referee Mike Dean.

Stoke fans were still making their feelings clear when City doubled their lead, Aguero heading in Kevin De Bruyne's delivery, and the home side felt further aggrieved when Aleksandar Kolarov's clumsy challenge on Joe Allen six yards from goal went unpunished.

City had won all 25 previous Premier League matches in which they led by two or more goals at half-time, but Mark Hughes' side were given hope of a comeback when Bojan Krkic converted a penalty past Willy Caballero - starting ahead of Joe Hart again - after another controversial call against Raheem Sterling.

Stoke pushed in search of a leveller as City began to show signs of fatigue following their European exertions, but Nolito's first Premier League goal in the closing stages - swiftly followed by a second - made the result safe and took the visitors level on points with Manchester United after two matches.

Sterling, booed by a number of home fans in the early stages, curled a shot narrowly over the crossbar from the edge of the area as City started strongly in blustery conditions.

Stoke showed encouraging signs on the counter-attack, with Allen unlucky not to turn a cross into Mame Diouf's path inside the area, but Shay Given had to be alert to stop Sterling slotting the ball into the bottom corner as City threatened again.

Stoke spoiled their good early work though by gifting City the lead with 27 minutes played. Shawcross was adjudged to have held on to Nicolas Otamendi's arm at a corner, allowing Aguero to fire high past Given from 12 yards.

Given blocked another Aguero effort as City looked to take control amid continued frustration from the home fans, but he could do nothing to stop the Argentina striker adding a second on 36 minutes as he glanced a superb header into the far corner following De Bruyne's free-kick from the right.

Caballero blocked Bardsley's volley at his left-hand post to preserve the lead, before Diouf headed wide after Allen's strong penalty appeals for a shove by Kolarov were ignored, but Stoke were given a lifeline just after the break.

Sterling was penalised for trying to block Shawcross from reaching a high ball at the far post, and Bojan dispatched the spot-kick high into Caballero's goal.

With the crowd in full voice and Jonathan Walters having been introduced from the bench, Stoke pressed hard to find an equaliser, and City were rewarded for some disciplined defending when they struck the killer blow on the counter-attack with four minutes left.

Kelechi Iheanacho, just two minutes after replacing Aguero, latched onto De Bruyne's pass before rounding Given and squaring the ball to Nolito, who side-footed home.

Nolito then scored again as Sterling broke clear before setting up the former Celta Vigo man for another simple finish.

Edo 2016: I’m my own man - Obaseki

Edo State All Progressive Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Godwin Obaseki, has declared that he is his own man.

He dismissed insinuations he is a puppet of outgoing Governor Adams Oshiomole.

He fingered those who have lived off the state’s resources as architects of the claims.

Obaseki, who spoke in an interview in Benin City, the Edo State capital, explained that his vision is to build on what the APC government has done in the last eight years.

The governorship hopeful explained he was part of the main architects for the design of the current administration.

He ruled out doing anything radically different from what Oshiomole is doing as governor.

According to him: “When I hear people talk about remote control yes, if I am going to be remote controlled to build more roads is that not good remote control?

“If I am going to be remote controlled to build more schools, to create jobs (is that not good remote controlled?)

“But I cannot be remote controlled to take public funds and distribute to people who are not adding value.”

He went on: “So the narratives you are hearing about Obaseki not being his own man…I don’t see myself doing anything radically different.

“That’s the challenge. That’s the politics. That’s the argument. I am my own man.”

On claims by the Peoples Democratic Party that the current administration ran the state into debts, Obaseki said Edo does not owe any bank.

He explained the negligible outstanding loans of Edo are not different from what obtain in other states.

He maintained loans taken by the state can be paid off within the shortest time especially with the increased Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

According to Obaseki: “If you go to the website of the Debt Management Office and check the loans of states, Edo’s total loan outstanding is less than N50 billion.

“Our total tax every year is about N24 billion. In fact this year, our total revenue from IGR alone is about N25 billion.

“So even if we didn’t do anything, two years of our IGR will pay off our total debts outstanding.

“So when people talk about debt I imagine where are they coming from? The interesting thing is that we do not owe a bank one dime.

“The type of debt we have is a type of debt states and governments should have. These are long dated debts.

“By next year we’ll finish paying the first bond we took. The rest we’ve taken from multilateral agencies like the World Bank facilities, which is almost like a dash, a grant with 10 to 20 years moratorium and less than 2% interest.

“So we don’t have that debt burden. We’ve thought about it very carefully and we have demonstrated to lenders that we are responsible borrowers.

“And that is why we’ve gotten the short of term loan we now have,” Obaseki stated.

Leicester City 0-0 Arsenal: Gunners survive penalty shouts to pick up point

Leicester City and Arsenal are both without a win in their opening two Premier League matches after they played out a 0-0 draw at the King Power Stadium.

Premier League champions Leicester lost 2-1 on the opening weekend of the season at Hull City while Arsenal suffered a 4-3 loss at home to Liverpool.

Neither side could be separated on Saturday leaving them five points off the top of the table.

In a tight first half, Arsenal threatened to break the deadlock with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain seeing a right-footed shot flash wide before Santi Cazorla's in-swinging free kick was palmed away by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.

Up the other end, Leicester had calls for a penalty turned down by referee Mark Clattenburg when Danny Drinkwater went down in the box under a challenge by Laurent Koscielny.

Leicester saw summer signing Nampalys Mendy limp off early in the second half, but then went close when Riyad Mahrez's free kick zipped just over the crossbar.

Jamie Vardy had an opportunity to make it 1-0 after a mix-up in the Arsenal midfield but the England striker blazed high and wide.

Arsenal continued to press for an opener with Theo Walcott being denied by a superb block by defender Wes Morgan, before Mesut Ozil saw his shot saved by Schmeichel.

Leicester then had another claim for a penalty denied by Clattenburg as Ahmed Musa went down under a challenge by Hector Bellerin, and in the final seconds Petr Cech reacted smartly to save Mahrez's shot.

Burnley 2-0 Liverpool: Burnley pull off shock win over Liverpool + Match Highlights

Burnley burst Liverpool's early-season bubble with a 2-0 victory which proved you do not have to have much of the ball to be effective.

The Clarets converted two of their three shots on target, with Sam Vokes grabbing his first Premier League goal inside two minutes and Andre Gray doubling the lead before half-time.

There was no rousing comeback from Liverpool like the one they produced last weekend at Arsenal to win 4-3 after going behind and, despite dominating possession, they never looked like scoring.

That was partly down to their hosts' dogged determination to hold onto their lead but largely due to a lack of cohesion and penetration in the final third.

Jurgen Klopp's side were laboured in their build-up, particularly in the first half, and careless and wasteful in possession.

They were punished after just 98 seconds when Ragnar Klavan's crossfield pass posed some difficulty for Nathaniel Clyne and he gave the ball away, with Gray quick to pick out Vokes who turned to smash home from the edge of the penalty area.

The Wales international missed the first half of Burnley's previous top-flight campaign with a knee injury which hampered his progress when he eventually came back but, after a confidence-boosting Euro 2016, the big frontman took Burnley's first Premier League goal against Liverpool - and their first in the league in six matches - well.

Liverpool proceeded to huff and puff through midfield into the final third with very little energy or dynamism and even less reward.

Striker Daniel Sturridge, making his first appearance of the season after a hip injury ruled him out last weekend, played in a predominantly right-sided forward role and did not get his first sight of goal until the half-hour when he drilled wide of the far post from the inside-right channel.

The England international's next contribution seven minutes before the break was more devastating but for all the wrong reasons as he lost possession on the edge of Burnley's penalty area.

However, he was not solely to blame as Klavan missed his challenge on the charging Steven Defour, the Clarets' club-record signing making his debut, and Gray easily skipped past weak tackles from Dejan Lovren and the recovering Klavan to stroke a past Simon Mignolet.

The last time Burnley scored more than one against Liverpool was in 1973 - a run of 20 matches - but they are a different team now and it was no more than they deserved.

Midfielder James Milner, who replaced the under-fire Alberto Moreno, looked understandably uncomfortable as a stand-in left-back. But the problems were further upfield, where an ineffective midfield failed to make the most of their possession.

Burnley, by contrast, were more efficient and clinical with the ball, and patient, tenacious and committed without it, which was most of the time.

The statistics showed Liverpool had 81 per cent possession and attempted 24 shots, but with only five on target and none which really troubled Tom Heaton.

Marko Grujic, a late substitute for Adam Lallana, forced Heaton into his first real save in the 79th minute, but Burnley ran out comfortable winners.

Sean Dyche's side are up and running with their first points of the season. For Klopp, it is back to the drawing board.

Nollywood actress allegedly destroys property worth N500k

An Upcoming Nollywood actress has been accused of destroying her friend’s property worth over N500,000.

An upcoming actress identified as Nazo Okezie, reportedly engaged one of her friends in an argument and fight, causing her friend to call her out on social media.

The friend identified as Chinenye Nwankwo, accused Nazo of destroying her belongings following their fallout.

Nollywood actress Nazo Ekezie
According to her, the fact that she and Nazo have been friends for over years, didn’t stop her from destroying her property, despite the fact that she provided the roof over their heads.

Read what she said below:

“Last year, I was about to move into a new place in lekki that was for N550k a year,my friend Nazo who has been my friend for ten years now asked to add N100k to the money so that she could stay over in my house whenever she was in lagos so I accepted and took the money from her because I felt we were friends and all. She has come to the house twice for extended stay and on this third visit, we had issue and this was because she has this friend who I did not like her constant visit to the house as she made me uncomfortable with her visits so I told her that I did not want the girl coming to the house.

That was the beginning of our riff to the extent that she threatened to beat me up in my house so i had to leave my house for her. Then last week i packed her belongings in my house and sent it through my cab man to her and she told the cab to return the bags to me, but I had also told the estate securities not to allow her into the house again. After that, i got a call from the police to report to their office which i did and on getting there she had told them that I stole her $1,000.

We were in the police for days till they asked me to sign an agreement that since my house rent was expiring on the 17th of August, 2016, I should allow her to stay till 17th and she leaves then. I asked if I could even refund her half of the N100k so she can leave and she refused. So when my rent expired on the 17th I renewed my rent and just today I went out to buy some things only to come home and see all my bags and shoes shredded to pieces, all my clothes too. I did not do anything to Naza to deserve this. Nobody deserves this at all.”

2019 presidency ticket cause of PDP crisis – Sheriff

The presidential ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2019 elections is the main cause of the current crisis tearing the party apart, its embattled National Chairman Senator Ali Modu Sheriff said yesterday.

Sheriff, who bared his mind in an interview with African Independent Television (AIT), accused Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State and a former Deputy National Chairman of PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, of plotting to hand the party’s ticket to a prominent leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said: “Wike and Secondus are working to give the party ticket in 2019 to a man in APC, a man that is not even bold enough to leave the APC and join us. He was in the PDP before. He was a founding father of the PDP.

“I don’t have to mention him. Secondus himself told me that he and Wike always meet this man to strategise plans on 2019. I told him that it is wrong. If the man is bold enough, let him come and join us now.

“They accused me of working for the APC. How? I have never played games like that. I had formed a party and was the BOT Chairman. I was a presidential candidate, three time senator, Minority Leader. Makarfi worked for the APC in 2015, Ben Obi was Atiku’s Vice Presidential Candidate, and Secondus and Wike are meeting an APC man regularly on how the party will be sold to him.

“Wike is full of arrogance and impunity. He is too small to pocket PDP. I will not allow him. There are people who can carry the flag within the party. PDP will not be sold.”

Sheriff is locked in a battle for the soul of the party with Senator Ahmed Makarfi whose tenure as chairman of the party’s caretaker committee was extended by one year in Port Harcourt last Wednesday.

The Police and Department of State Security (DSS) sealed the Sharks Stadium, Port Harcourt which was planned for the national convention convened by the Makarfi faction. The security agencies cited an order by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court, Abuja on Tuesday which restrained the party from proceeding with the convention.

Justice Ibrahim Watila of the Federal High Court, Port Harcourt on the same day validated the convention while Justice Nwakama Ogbonna of a Federal Capital Territory High Court, Abuja declared Sheriff an illegal chairman of the PDP.

Some other members of the Makarfi faction, including former minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode, had accused Sheriff of working for the APC

He thought housekeeper stole stuff, but she stole his wife's sex

“I have hired a young housekeeper. He was just 25 years of age and a cute girl, too. At first, everything went ok, and I was happy with her work. However, after a while, I noticed some things started to disappear. It first it was my watch. I missed it, but later on, somehow it reappeared on my desk after her visit.

Later on, I saw that a bag of the sex toys we kept in our bedroom also disappeared. I could not understand why would a cleaner take those? But I got worried and decided to set up hidden cameras around the house.

I had to leave for two weeks and checked the video only after my return. What I saw there was shocking. At first, it showed the housekeeper girl getting out the sex toys, sitting on our bed and using them. I thought: what the heck?

What happened next shocked me even more! Instead of scolding the housekeeper, the wife joined her, and they both had sex with each other using the toys.

I have never expected any such thing. Now I have two questions to ask: is my wife a lesbian and was she cheating on me? Technically she did not sleep with another man. What shell I do?! Please, help with your advice!”

It’s a strange story, and only a few of us had such an experience to help the guy. Share your opinions in the comment section.

Lassa fever Kills medical doctor, three others in Anambra

Anambra State is now battling to save lives, as Lassa fever has claimed the lives of a medical doctor and three others in the state.

This was a revelation by the state Ministry of Health Thursday in Awka during a one-day Lassa fever training workshop.

One of the resource persons at the workshop Dr. Jane Ezeonu confirmed that the medical doctor died at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Teaching Hospital, Nnewi, three days ago.

Also, the Director of Public Health in the state, Dr Emmanuel Okafor, said the state had equally recorded the death of three others, recently.

For Ezeonu, the late medical doctor was referred to NAUTH from Asaba, Delta state.

She warned the people of the state to stop drinking raw garri, adding that they should protect their food and related items from rats.

Furthermore, she explained that people don’t acquire immunity after suffering from Lassa fever.

Ezeonu said general hygiene was important in Lassa fever prevention.

For Dr Okafor, the essence of the workshop was to train professionals who would go to the grassroots to educate the people on the prevention of the disease.

According to him “In Anambra State, we don’t know the number of cases of the disease, but we have three confirmed deaths”

He therefore, called on health workers in the state to exercise high standard in handling Lassa fever cases.

But he hinted that the state government had put machinery in motion to tackle the scourge.

In his speech, the permanent secretary in the state ministry of health, Dr Okwuchukwu Chukwuka insisted that there was no such epidemic in the state.

He represented the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Josephat Akabuike on the training workshop.

He said “It is a training workshop for health professionals in the 21 local government areas of the state who would sensitize and disseminate information about Lassa fever to the grassroots.

“We are having the workshop for prevention, not that we have an epidemic in the state,” the permanent secretary said.

It was gathered Thursday that Lassa fever had been on in the state, with the Ministry of Health doing everything possible to hide it.

Before now, the State Government had denied the influx of tuberculosis that hit about 2000 patients in the state in recent times.

We hope Buhari finds oil in the North, so he can let the Niger Delta go - Avengers

The insurgent group, Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), has resuscitated the threat of a creating a Niger Delta republic from Nigeria, should the federal government fail to consider calls for restructuring of the federation.

In a statement dispatched electronically to the media Thursday by its spokesman, Mudoch Agbinibo, the group suggested an October 1 ultimatum, hinging its reason for the threat on an alleged division of the country by the administrations ‘misdirected policies’.

The statement said the nation’s situation had become so precarious that nobody, not even the Niger Delta people, wish to continue to be part of the Nigerian system.

“Our prayer for Buhari and the Northern hypocrite (Northern Governors) is that oil should be found in commercial quantity in the North, so they can let the Niger Delta go.

“The Buhari Led government has fail Nigerians with their misdirected policies that has divide the country, as such nobody wants to be part of that failed state not even the Niger Delta.

“The October 1st, declaration of independence is still sacrosanct. If the Nigeria government fails to retrace its step by restructuring this country. We want to warn the general public that those using NDA to defraud people days of reckoning is close,” the statement said.

Enemies are jealous of my rising international profile - Goodluck Jonathan

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has again denied allegations that he is sponsoring the Niger Delta Avengers.

He added that the allegation was being sponsored by those who were intimidated by his rising profile in Nigeria and abroad.

The former President said this in a statement by his spokesman, Mr. Ikechukwu Eze, on Thursday.

There had been publications that the Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government had begun probing Jonathan over alleged link to the Niger Delta Avengers.

The statement, however, said, “It is sad that the publications wore the cloak of deceit from the same misguided characters that are hell-bent on pulling down the former President despite his clear record of diligent service to his country and long-standing commitment to the good of the society.

“There is no doubt that there exists such people who may have scores to settle with the former President, but are now feeling frustrated by the fact that his national and international profiles have continued to rise despite their recourse to endless muck-raking character assassination. Such people will stop at nothing to continue to throw obstacles, albeit futilely, on his path.

“We are aware that the same people approached other well-meaning newspapers with the same false information, but they were wise to turn it down on account of its absurdity.”

Jonathan advised the media to be professional and do more of investigative reporting instead of making reference to allegations of aggrieved militants.

He said no responsible security agency would release such falsehood to the press.

The statement added, “From what we know about intelligence gathering, there is no responsible government agency that would rush, as claimed in the newspaper stories, to adopt the accusations of a questionable rebellious organisation as its own findings, without applying the professional processes of rigour and due diligence.

“Our media houses should be careful not to make the country a laughing stock by being hoodwinked into passing off the perverted voices of irritant groups as that of our well-respected official and security authorities.”

The ex-President said newspapers promoting spurious allegations against him were toying with libel and destroying the image of Nigeria.

“Apart from toying with the serious issue of libel, those newspapers lending themselves to be cheaply used by miscreants are also doing gross disservice to our collective good and the image of the country,” he said.

Abia Governor Wins Appeal on Stay of Execution

The Court of Appeal has held that Justice Okon Abang was wrong to have assumed jurisdiction ‎in a motion for stay of execution of his earlier judgments delivered on June 27 even after the appeals against the judgments had been entered.

Justice Philomina Ekpe, who read the lead judgment, held that what Justice Abang ought to have done in line with time-honoured doctrine of “stari decisis” was to have transferred the motion to the Court of Appeal for determination.

The appellate court ruled in favour of the appellant, Dr Okezie Ikpeazu, on his appeal challenging Abang’s decision‎ to hear the application for a stay of execution of his judgment when he was duly informed that the appeals had been entered.

Justice Ekpe in her lead judgment held: “The lower court (Justice Abang) has made a complete somersault of the entire suit. Once an appeal is entered into, there is nothing left for the trial court to adjudicate upon. All the trial court was supposed to do was to transmit the record of proceedings to the appellate court.

“But it deliberately chose to do otherwise. This is against Order 4 Rules 10 and 11 of the Court of Appeal Rules 2011. The lower court acted ultra vires.”

Justice Abang ‎had insisted that he had jurisdiction to hear a motion for stay of execution of his earlier judgments delivered on June 27 even after the appeals against the judgments had been entered at the Appeal Court.

‎In her contributing judgment, Justice Morenikeji Ogunwumiju who presided at the hearing of the appeal also held that Justice Abang “deliberately stood the law on its head”‎ when he erroneously assumed jurisdiction to hear the motion and adjourned it till a later date.

She further held that Justice Abang lacked jurisdictions to interpret the provisions of the Court of Appeal being the rules of a superior court.

Judgment is still ongoing in the main appeal challenging Justice Abang’s Judgment which removed the governor from office.

Details later.

Abia: Another victory for Ikpeazu as Appeal Court upholds PDP’s appeal

Governor Okezie Ikpeazu has won the fourth suit in the appeal against the nullification of his election by Justice Okon Abang of Federal High Court, Abuja.

The five man panel of the court ruled that the originating summon which formed the basis of the judgment was incompetent as it was not signed by any legal practitioner.

The judgment was the fourth ruling in the six appeals against the judgment of Okon Abang which nullified the election of Governor Ikpeazu.

Justice Abang had consequently ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to issue a certificate of return to Uche Ogah.

The fifth judgment is now being delivered.

BREAKING: Abia Governorship Tussle: Ikpeazu wins first appeal

An Abuja division of the Court of Appeal, on Thursday, faulted the judgement by Justice Okon Abang of the Federal High Court in Abuja, which sacked the embattled Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu.
Justice Abang had on July 27, 2016 sacked Ikpeazu as governor over tax evasion.

The judge had on July 8 insisted that he had jurisdiction to hear a motion for stay of execution of his earlier judgments delivered even after the appeals against the judgments had been entered.

Delivering the ruling, the Justice Helen Ogunwumiju-led five-man bench held that Abang’s judgment was made in error.

Reading the judgement, Justice Philomina Ekpe, held that Justice Abang in line with time-honoured doctrine of “stari decisis” should have transferred the motion to the Court of Appeal for determination.

Justice Ekpe also held that Justice Abang wrongly interpreted the provisions of Order 4(10) and (11) of the Court of Appeal rules when he held that the said provisions were only applicable to an interlocutory ruling of the lower court.

The judge read that Justice Abang lacked jurisdictions to interpret the provisions of the Court of Appeal being the rules of a superior court.

A member of the panel, Justice Ogunwumiju, held that Abang by justifying his jurisdiction to hear the motion, when an appeal has been entered, “deliberately stood the law on its head.”

6 Nigerian Celebrities That Have Being Dubbed as Gay

For years now, these celebrities have battled so much to refute the gay rumours that have seriously been trailing them. Despite their efforts, the rumours keep escalating.

The media and blogs are filled with gay rumours about these celebrities. As a matter of fact, none of the people carrying the rumours has any concrete proof that any of these celebrities are actually gay. So they are likely mere rumours.

1. DENRELE EDUN

Denrele is the one that is worst hit by this gay rumour. His weird lifestyle may have necessitated this rumour. He once talked about the gay rumours trailing him in an interview. Excerpt below:

Is Derenle Gay?

I think people believe what they want to believe.

But a lot of people believe you are. And to prove them right, a picture of you Charley Boy went viral on the internet recently…

“I don’t read the news, I make the news. The thing is people tend to look for loopholes when they see you doing well. And since people feel I am feminine in nature, then they think I’m gay. But the truth is I don’t really care about what people say because I’m not fashioned according to what the society expects. And also I think for my personality, if I were gay, the news would have grown from speculations and would have been in people’s face.On the part of Charley Boy and me, I was not expecting the paparazzi that came with the picture.

2. CHARLY BOY

His weird lifestyle also contributed to his gay rumours. Pictures of him kissing Denrele increased the rumours too. He was once quoted to have said he’s gay and the head of illuminati in Nigeria.

It’s hilarious! Back in the days, when you have a friend who you go out with often, it was cool, people called him your best friend. Now, when they see twoguys together, people begin to have weird thoughts. You see, in this business of entertainment, what you need is someone that believes in you to grow. Uti is big, and he helped me a lot prior to now that I’m beginning to gather my momentum. He is a ‘BigBrother Africa All Stars’ Winner. You can hate him but you can’t take that away from him. A lot of these local celebrities, outside Victoria Island nobody knows them. Uti is someone who grandmothers and pepper sellers know. We were in Ghana recently and the President of Ghana saw Uti at the Airport and recognized him. You can’t hate on success.

«I am not even attracted to my own self,I love myself as a person but I cant imagine to get (makes sound). Besides, my love for women is out of this horoscope, I love to feel it”

In a statement by its spokesman Emma Powerful, IPOB said MEND and Gbomo Jomo were among those speaking from both sides of their mouths.

The statement reads: “The last time, they accused former President Goodluck Jonathan and others of sponsoring the freedom fighters, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), the public ignored them.

"Now, they have turned around to accuse IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, Biafra struggle continues"

Reasons why I named my dog ‘Buhari’ — Man explains

The Police in Ogun State, yesterday, released unconditionally, the 30-year-old trader, Joe Fortemose Chinakwe, who was arrested last Saturday for naming his pet dog ‘Buhari’.

The embattled trader, who was visibly angry after his three-day incarceration in police cell, was let off the hook around 5pm on Tuesday after the intervention of both the Serkin Hausa and President-General of non-indigenes in the state.

It was learned that the prompt intervention of the elders made the complainant to withdraw the case he reported against the trader at Sango-Ota division which was later transferred to Police headquarters at Eleweran.

However, police sources said both the complainant and suspect were made to sign an undertaking not to cause any breach of peace again. Speaking to journalists after this release, the trader, a father of two from the Niger Delta, who trades on second hand clothing lamented that he was made to suffer for no just cause.

Narrating his ordeal, Chinakwe said “It is annoying because the complainant is from Niger Republic and I am sure he is one of those illegal aliens in this country. He connived with one Police Sergeant from the Northern part of Nigeria called Musa, who works at Sango Police division to humiliate me. Worse still, the Divisional Police Officer there, did not help matters as he refused to entertain any plea from me after I was arrested that Saturday night. He simply ordered his men to throw me into the cell.”

Continuing, he said...

“I did not commit any offence. I named my beloved pet dog Buhari, who is my hero. My admiration for Buhari started far back when he was a military Head of State. It continued till date that he is a civilian President. After reading his dogged fight against corruption, which is like a canker worm eating into the very existence of this country, I solely decided to rename my beloved dog which I called Buhari, after him. I did not know that I was committing an offence for admiring Buhari.

“I was intimidated and thrown inside the cell with hardened criminals for about three days. While I was there, the complainant from Niger Republic and Sergeant Musa from the North kept on taunting me saying people from my part of the country are trouble makers and that after detaining me, they will throw me into prison where I will die unsung.

”Even when my wife came with our baby on her back, they stopped her from giving me food. One of my friends that came to see me was also maltreated. “While taking me to Eleweran the next day, they handcuffed and chained me together with that my friend. Fortunately, when we got to police headquarters, both the Commissioner of Police and other officers were angry with their colleagues at Sango-Ota. ”They were wondering loudly why I was brought to the headquarters over such a minor case. It’s very unfortunate that I have to be so humiliated in my own country because of the antics of a foreigner in connivance with my brother from the North.”
